My dad and I were watching the TV one evening when he said, “Maybe it’s time for men in delaware to get facelifts.” I swear I almost doubled over and fell off the couch. Don’t get me wrong; I’m not saying that men can’t have face lifts. But my dad is almost sixty and the first thing I said was, “Is this the new thing with mid-life crisis? Face lifts for Delaware men?”

It was, to say, the weirdest conversation ever. Dad said that it wasn’t about his mid-life crisis; it’s just that he really needed it. I looked at him and saw all those stress lines, worry lines—all those unneeded lines on his face—and found myself agreeing with him. He looked a heck of a lot older than his real age. Right then and there, I promised that I would set up a face lift appointment for him.

“Never felt better.” That was my dad’s first sentence after he saw the results of the procedure. Indeed, he felt better and I added that he looked better. He kept looking at the mirror as if he couldn’t believe that he looked like he was only forty. I guess it really wasn’t about the mid-life crisis or about vanity; it really was about feeling good about yourself. It felt like I gave my dad a new lease on life.
